You dream of your child growing up with two languages. And somewhere between the busy days, the doubts creep in: Am I doing enough? Is it too late? Why does my child keep answering in the majority language? If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone, and this talk was made for you.
This conversation is part of our ongoing series inside the Childhood Potential Club, where members gain access to expert talks, live Q&A sessions, and a growing library of practical resources for raising children with connection and confidence.
The formula behind every bilingual family: exposure plus need
Adam boils thirty years of experience down to two conditions. Your child needs plenty of exposure to the target language, and a genuine need (or at least a desire) to use it actively. Every strategy in the talk circles back to these two conditions, and every struggling bilingual journey he has seen comes down to a shortfall in one of them. How you satisfy them looks different in every family, and that is exactly why he walks through so many everyday angles.
6,570 days, and why an ordinary Tuesday matters
Childhood lasts about 6,570 days. It sounds like a lot until your children are suddenly teenagers with their own lives. Adam shows how keeping this number in mind makes you more mindful and proactive from day to day, and why the early years, when you have the most time and influence, are the golden window for building a strong foundation in both languages.
You do not have to do this perfectly
One of the warmest parts of the talk: perfection is not a requirement. Every parent fails somewhere along the way. The difference is between failing downward, where frustration turns into giving up, and failing upward, where you learn from what did not work, adjust, and keep going. As Adam puts it, there is always a payoff to perseverance.
Talk a lot: the biggest piece of the puzzle
The single biggest action is simply talking a lot in your target language, starting long before your child can answer back. The input is the fuel for the later output. Adam demonstrates his narrate-your-day technique live, turning something as ordinary as cutting carrots into a stream of rich, playful language. He also shares his picture-prompts trick for parents who run out of things to say.
Read a lot, and keep reading
The second biggest piece is reading aloud every day, and not stopping once your child learns to read alone. A child’s listening comprehension runs ahead of their reading ability for years, so reading aloud keeps feeding them richer language than they could get on their own. Adam read to his kids well into their teens.
